Responsibilities
Election judges maintain polling place operations on Election Day. A variety of duties are assigned to election judges, including:
- Registering voters
- Distributing ballots
- Assisting voters
- Maintaining voter security
Become an Election Judge
In order to become an election judge you must be:
- A U.S. citizen
- At least 18 years old
- A resident of Minnesota for at least 20 days
- Able to read, write, and speak English
*A 2-hour election judge training is also required and conducted by Beltrami County Elections every even year in summer.
Minnesota law requires employers to give employees time off to be an election judge without reduction in pay. You must:
- Notify your employer in writing 20 days before Election Day.
- Attach a copy of your schedule and wage to your written notice.
Election judges can volunteer or be paid. Wages may vary by location.
